My name is David and I provide comprehensive English tuition for students in Steyning, drawing on my Bachelor's in Education and two decades of teaching experience. The curriculum for Year 10 and 11 students at schools like Steyning Grammar reflects an integrated approach to English Language and Literature, developing analytical skills and creative expression in tandem. This involves scrutinising both fiction and non-fiction texts to compare how different writers employ linguistic subtleties to engage an audience, whilst addressing the specific needs of boards like AQA and OCR. For the Language papers, students analyse non-fiction, comparing writers’ perspectives and methods across different texts. This includes evaluating how an author uses modal verbs to suggest possibility or certainty, or how they employ assertion to present an opinion as a fact. When producing their own transactional writing, such as a speech or a persuasive essay, students examine how a semantic field can maintain a consistent tone and engage a specific audience. Finally, careful checking of completed work helps to improve the overall structure and impact of their writing.

In the literature section of the syllabus, students engage with multifaceted themes and character motivation through the study of diverse texts and poets. A student may examine the political allegory in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, looking at how the author uses the setting of a farm to critique social inequality. When studying Shakespearean tragedy, they might explore the character of Hamlet, analysing his internal conflict and the historical context of the play. We work on essay writing practice, focusing on how to use textual evidence to support an argument and how to integrate historical and social context into their responses. This process involves the use of past exam papers and a review of the marking criteria to ensure students are fully prepared for the technical standards of the examination. The positive testimonials I have received from parents over the years serve as an objective validation of these pedagogical methods.

For pupils at Steyning Primary aiming to secure a place at competitive secondary institutions such as Hurstpierpoint or Shoreham College, the preparation for 11 plus or 13 plus entrance exams is a vital part of their journey. These assessments often involve advanced comprehension tasks and verbal reasoning, where students must identify synonyms and antonyms or solve shuffled sentences with precision and clarity. We work on creative writing techniques, looking at how a student might employ onomatopoeia to create a vivid soundscape within a story. By teaching them to use adjectives and adverbs to enhance their descriptive language, I ensure they can produce work that stands out to examiners. My students consistently gain places at top schools following this detailed approach to the entry process.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
