GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Storrington

Residents of Storrington and the surrounding villages often look for ways to support their children's progress as they move through the different stages of their schooling. My name is David and I have more than 20 years of experience as an English tutor, holding a Bachelor of Education. For students attending local secondary schools like Steyning Grammar or The Weald, I provide comprehensive support for both GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature. In the Language papers, we explore how to handle the analysis of both fiction and non-fiction, where students learn to identify the structural and linguistic choices made in a variety of texts. A student might examine how a writer uses emotive language to sway a reader's opinion, or how the use of hyperbole can emphasise a particular point in a persuasive speech. When working on descriptive writing, we look at the overall structure of a piece, perhaps employing a cyclical structure to bring the reader back to the opening image at the end of the narrative. Adopting this strategy ensures that the writing feels complete and balanced, fulfilling the requirement for a controlled and well-sustained piece of imaginative work.
The literature curriculum necessitates students to analyse a variety of texts, focusing on themes, character development, and the impact of the writer's choices. A student may explore the themes of redemption and social responsibility in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, analysing how the author uses the character of Scrooge to critique Victorian society. Shifting focus to modern drama, a student could examine the presentation of social class and fate in Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers, analysing the different opportunities afforded to the two main characters. We work on the requirements of the exam, such as practising extract-based analysis and learning how to structure comparative responses. These sessions involve a detailed look at the examiner’s perspective and the use of marking criteria to ensure students are working toward achieving grade 9s in their final assessments.
For pupils at Storrington Primary, the transition to secondary school often involves preparing for competitive entrance examinations for schools like Seaford College. These assessments require a strong performance in reading comprehension and creative writing, where a student must demonstrate their ability to use descriptive language effectively. We might work on how to use vivid imagery to bring a setting to life, or how to use a simile to make a comparison more striking. The sessions also cover verbal reasoning and vocabulary expansion, helping students to tackle multiple-choice papers with confidence. Positive reviews from many families over the years reflect the progress their children have made during these preparation sessions.
To complete the preparation for school entry, I offer dedicated support for interview preparation, helping students to manage their confidence and refine their communication skills. We work on how to answer questions clearly and how to discuss their interests, such as their favourite authors or the books they have recently read. This helps the student to present themselves in the best possible light during the interview process, ensuring they can express their ideas with clarity. By providing a supportive environment to practise these skills, I help students to overcome any anxiety they may have about the admissions process.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
