Surbiton is home to many students who require targeted support to meet the requirements of the national curriculum and competitive entry processes. My name is David, and I hold a Bachelor of Education and have more than 20 years of experience in teaching and tutoring. For pupils currently at St Andrew's and St Mark's Primary, I offer preparation for 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations, which are essential for those looking to enter schools such as Kingston Grammar or Tiffin. The assessment process often includes the ISEB pre-test and multiple-choice papers covering verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. Students work on their creative writing techniques, learning to use vivid language and clear expression to craft a compelling story. We also spend time on interview practice, helping the student to build the confidence needed to speak with examiners. This well-rounded preparation has helped many of my students secure admission to their chosen secondary schools, an outcome I am proud to facilitate.

As students progress toward their GCSEs and IGCSEs at schools like Surbiton High or Southborough High, the curriculum demands a more refined understanding of the English Language. A student might be asked to produce non-fiction writing, such as a formal letter or an article, using rhetorical devices like asyndeton or sibilance to engage the audience. I also detail the requirements of imaginative writing, where a pupil might use personification to enhance a descriptive piece. By studying the marking criteria of exam boards like OCR and Eduqas, students learn how to structure their work to meet the high standards of the syllabus. I also incorporate the analysis of both fiction and non-fiction texts, helping pupils to compare writers’ perspectives and methods. The excellent results my students achieve are a direct result of this detailed and comprehensive approach to language study.

The final component of the tuition involves the study of English Literature, where students learn to analyse multifaceted texts and poets. A pupil might explore the Regency fiction and social class themes in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, focusing on the writer’s intentions and the historical context of the novel. Furthermore, the curriculum could feature the work of Carol Ann Duffy, where a student might examine poetic structure and the use of imagery in contemporary poetry. I guide students through the process of essay composition, ensuring they can produce well-evidenced responses and handle extract-based analysis with confidence. My students have frequently received many positive testimonials for their progress in these areas. By focusing on the refinement of analytical skills, I help each student reach their full academic potential.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
