My name is David and I provide professional English tuition to the Totternhoe community, using my Bachelor’s degree in Education to help students meet the requirements of the GCSE and IGCSE curricula. For pupils at Totternhoe CE Academy, preparing for competitive entrance exams is a key focus as they target a place at Haberdashers' Boys' School. These entrance examinations often involve advanced comprehension tasks that require a student to answer with evidence and show a clear understanding of character feelings. In the creative writing section, a candidate might use alliteration to add a rhythmic quality to a story or employ vivid language to enhance the descriptive depth of a scene. Verbal reasoning tasks involve logic puzzles and synonyms and antonyms, helping the applicant to develop the mental agility needed for GL multiple-choice papers. Through consistent timed practice and a thorough review of homework, students learn to manage the admissions requirements of prestigious secondary schools and achieve success in securing places at top schools.

In the Literature paper, students explore central themes and character motivations through the study of a wide range of texts. A pupil may examine the social responsibility and power dynamics in William Golding's Lord of the Flies, or evaluate the historical context of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Analysing quotations and using textual evidence are vital for essay composition, as students must demonstrate how the writer's craft contributes to the overall meaning of the work. We also work on unseen poetry, where a learner might compare how two poets use language techniques to explore a similar theme, such as nature or war. Developing a poetic voice and understanding the use of advanced imagery allows students to produce critical responses that reflect thematic depth and historical awareness. The quality of my teaching is consistently evidenced by the positive feedback I receive regarding the progress and Grade 9s achieved by my students.

For students at Queensbury Academy, the English Language syllabus involves a balance of interpretation and production, where they must analyse how a writer uses structural shifts to engage the reader in an unseen fiction extract. When producing their own narrative writing, a learner might use metaphors to add depth to a description or employ juxtaposition to create a sharp contrast between two conflicting ideas. Transactional formats such as speeches or formal letters require a clear expression of a viewpoint, and a student could use anaphora to reinforce a persuasive argument or employ a specific tone and register to engage the audience. Understanding audience awareness and purpose and form is essential for building a perspective that meets the strict criteria of major examination boards like Edexcel or Eduqas. By working through past exam papers and identifying areas for improvement, pupils can refine their writing skills and approach their assessments with confidence. These sessions are built on more than 20 years of experience, ensuring that every student receives the expert guidance they need to succeed in their examinations.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
