Providing a comprehensive service to the Tunstall community, I, David, offer tuition that addresses the requirements of the 11 plus and 13 plus admissions process for applicants at primary schools such as Mill Hill. Possessing a Bachelor of Education and drawing on more than 20 years of experience, I assist candidates as they work to meet the competitive benchmarks of target institutions including Newcastle-under-Lyme School. Refining a student's ability to construct narrative writing tasks involves demonstrating how to use alliteration to sharpen a description, such as 'the battered black barrel bobbed beside the boat at the shadowed edge of the wharf' to immerse the reader in a setting defined by neglect and isolation. My sessions also explore how punctuation for effect can manage the pace of a story, incorporating an ellipsis in a phrase like 'the sand ceased to flow through the hourglass...' to create a sense of profound stillness as the character realises their time has run out. Developing the mechanics of reading comprehension is equally vital, and I demonstrate the process of answering interpretive questions by having the student identify the 'rusted anchor' in a passage to deduce that the writer uses this object to mirror a protagonist's inability to move on from their past. Refining the precision of these answers prepares candidates for the written assessments and multiple-choice papers required for secondary school entry. Acquiring this clarity of expression is a significant factor for applicants looking to secure places at top schools.

While the admissions process involves written papers, the GCSE curriculum for older students attending Co-op Academy Tunstall or Ormiston Horizon Academy demands a different interpretive skill set across both Language and Literature. I guide students through both Shakespearean tragedy and 19th-century prose, requiring the learner to provide a well-evidenced critical response to a set text. We might explore the character motivations and social hierarchy in Shakespeare's Coriolanus, analysing the catastrophic pride found in the playwright's presentation of Caius Martius when he declares 'I’ll never / Be such a gosling to obey instinct; but stand, / As if a man were author of himself, / And knew no other kin.' to illustrate his rejection of familial and social bonds. A student may also explore George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss, shifting away from tired thematic summaries to examine the physical reality of the mill's interior, specifically the 'dusty smell of the ungrounded wheat' to see how the writer establishes the stifling, sensory world of Maggie’s childhood. Teaching the learner how to structure paragraphs using textual evidence to directly answer the exam question, I ensure that every point connects back to the writer's craft. By teaching the pupil to link historical context to the specific points they are making in an essay, the student builds the profile required for achievement in the Literature paper. Integrating these detailed interpretations into a coherent argument allows students to satisfy the marking criteria for major boards and has resulted in many of my pupils achieving excellent GCSE results.

The Language syllabus requires students to handle both the analysis of unseen fiction and the production of expressive formats like articles or persuasive formal letters. When addressing structure questions, the student identifies how a writer has arranged a text to interest the reader, regularly identifying structural techniques such as in medias res in a phrase like 'the frayed edges of the flag whipped against the mast' to launch a scene by establishing a mood of relentless wind and physical decay. A learner could also consider how the placement of events or foreshadowing influences the reader, perhaps noting how 'the torn standard signalled the coming defeat' to create a stark feeling of impending failure. In their analytical tasks, the pupil could also identify symbolism, such as how 'the ebony raven' represents a character’s isolation to emphasise their total withdrawal from society. The curriculum also demands high standards in transactional composition, and when drafting a formal letter of complaint, the pupil might use a tricolon to state 'the damaged envelope, the missing contents, and the delayed arrival' to create a tone of justified frustration. By comparing methods across major exam boards including AQA and Edexcel, students learn to identify areas for improvement in their own writing. I have received positive parent comments regarding the overall progress and the results achieved by those who master these assessment criteria.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
