Working within the local community of Wellingborough, I, David, have spent over twenty years providing English tuition to support students through their GCSEs. Using my Bachelor of Education, I provide a comprehensive service that addresses both the analytical and creative requirements of the syllabus. Students attending Sir Christopher Hatton Academy practise transactional writing, such as crafting formal articles or speeches that require a clear tone and register. A writer might use an analogy to explain a complex idea by comparing it to something more familiar to the audience. When working on descriptive writing, a learner could employ superlatives to emphasise the extreme nature of a setting or character trait. We also work on sensory imagery, where the student selects details that appeal to the reader's sight and sound to create a vivid scene. These skills are measured against the mark schemes of major exam boards like AQA or Edexcel to ensure students are working toward the highest standards. Grade 9s are achieved through a combination of technical accuracy and the ability to engage the reader through sophisticated structural choices.

Addressing the dual nature of the syllabus requires equal attention to English Literature, where I help students explore the historical and social context of their set texts. A student could examine the Victorian mystery and crime elements in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four, analysing how the writer uses setting to build tension. For the modern drama module, a learner might explore R.C. Sherriff's Journey's End, investigating the themes of heroism and fear within the historical context of the First World War trenches. We practise extract-based questions and analysing quotations to ensure the pupil can build a well-evidenced critical response. Essay structure is a priority, as students must learn to use textual evidence to support their interpretation of the author’s craft. My professional standards are validated by the positive testimonials I have received from families regarding the significant progress their children have made.

For younger pupils at Olympic Primary or Victoria Junior School, the work addresses building the profile required for admission to leading institutions. Many families target independent school entry to Wellingborough School or Kimbolton School, where entrance examinations involve advanced comprehension and written assessments. Candidates practise inference and deduction to understand character feelings and word meanings in context. Reasoning tasks involve identifying patterns and word relationships to solve reasoning tasks within multiple-choice papers. A student might use figurative language in their creative writing to create an atmosphere, ensuring they use punctuation for effect. Working through past exam papers helps the applicant manage their time and avoid common errors. These skills are essential for candidates aiming for entry success at competitive secondary schools.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
