Experienced English Tutor Woolwich | 11+ and GCSE

The community in Woolwich and the wider Royal Borough of Greenwich has access to several excellent educational opportunities, and my English tuition service is designed to help students make the most of them. My name is David, and I am a professional tutor with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and over 20 years of experience. For pupils at St Mary's Catholic Primary or Cardwell Primary, the aim is often to prepare for the 11 plus and 13+ entrance exams. We address the requirements of schools such as Eltham College, covering verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and creative writing. Students learn to work under exam conditions and refine their technique, ensuring they can handle the competitive selection process. We work on transactional writing, such as crafting a persuasive article or a formal speech, where the student must use a tricolon to engage their audience. A pupil might also explore descriptive writing, learning how to use pathetic fallacy or sensory imagery to create a vivid setting. By examining the marking criteria of major exam boards like AQA and Edexcel, students learn how to produce the articulate work necessary for their final assessments.

The English Literature component of the curriculum is equally essential, requiring a deep engagement with a variety of syllabus texts. A student may address the social conflict in Willy Russell's Blood Brothers. Another candidate could explore the evocative modern poetry of Carol Ann Duffy. We spend time analysing quotations and discussing the historical and social context of the work to understand the writer’s intentions. By practising essay composition and the integration of textual evidence, pupils learn to produce the critical responses required for academic success. This comprehensive approach to tuition has led many of my students to achieve excellent GCSE results, providing them with the foundation needed for Sixth Form.
